Cai Jianqiang, deputy director of the National Cancer Center and deputy dean of the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, recently stated at the 3rd China Cancer Summit Forum that under the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment model (MDT), the formulation of precise and personalized treatment plans can maximize the length of advanced cancer The life of the patient even gives him a chance to be cured. The National Cancer Center will comprehensively promote the MDT model to help achieve the goals of my country's cancer prevention and control actions.
MDT refers to a model that takes the patient as the center and cooperates with disease-related multidisciplinary experts to discuss and discuss to determine the diagnosis and staging of the patient and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. The National Health Commission has carried out oncology MDT pilot work nationwide from 2018 to 2020.
Cai Jianqiang said that at present, the general diagnosis and treatment model for cancer patients in my country is that whoever “catch” the patient first will see it. Under such a treatment mode, patients may receive repeated examinations, over-treatment, improper treatment, etc., resulting in missed optimal treatment opportunities.
What is the significance of MDT for advanced cancer patients? Take the high incidence of colorectal cancer in my country as an example. Due to the insidious onset, no obvious symptoms in the early stage, it is easy to miss diagnosis, easy to metastasize and relapse, and many patients are already in the advanced stage. The Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences took the lead in establishing the MDT Collaborative Group for Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastasis in 2007, and successively established expert consensus on diagnosis and treatment and specialized disease associations. Data shows that the 5-year survival rate of patients treated by the MDT collaborative group has reached 46%, which has reached the international advanced level.
my country’s Cancer Prevention and Control Action proposed that by 2030, the overall 5-year survival rate for cancer should not be less than 46.6%. A number of academicians and experts in the field of oncology who attended the conference said that the digestive system tumors, such as esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, and intestinal cancer, are now well-equipped to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality in my country. The application of MDT has significantly improved the 5-year survival rate of this type of tumor and is of great significance to achieving the goal of cancer prevention and treatment.
